The TOEFL iBT Exam

What Do I Do First - GiveMeSomeEnglish!!!

Preparing for The TOEFL iBT Exam is something that I have been helping students with for over five years now, and I can say, with absolute confidence, that the MOST important thing that someone preparing to take The TOEFL iBT Exam needs to do FIRST is…

Know The Format Of The Exam!!!

What Does This Entail?

Until one knows those things thoroughly, it is completely pointless to waste any money on taking the exam.  The reason for this is very simple.

The TOEFL iBT Exam does NOT test how much a person knows, but how well a person will be able to function in a University-type environment

The Ability To Learn - GiveMeSomeEnglish!!!

In other words, it tests a person’s ability to learn and to demonstrate what he or she has learned.

Therefore, a person with a large vocabulary, who has achieved a very high skill-level in English can “fail” utterly if he or she does not know what to expect or how to answer each question type.

TOEFL Fail - GiveMeSomeEnglish!!!

Where-as, a person with only a moderate vocabulary and an intermediate skill-level in English – who knows EXACTLY what to expect in each section, AND knows how to answer each question, can achieve a perfect score on the exam.

So if you pay a lot of money for a TOEFL preparation course, and the instructor does NOT go over the format of the exam on the first day of class, go ask for your money back!

How Do I Know If I’m “Good Enough”

If you want to know if you have a high-enough English level to take The TOEFL iBT Exam, then there is one quick way to find out…  If you read this article and comprehended most of it, without having to translate it or look up a lot of words…  then your English level is (probably) high enough for the reading section.

As for the Listening, Speaking, and Writing Sections, it may be necessary to either find the help of a qualified coach/teacher/instructor, or to at least *take a diagnostic test which will help you to see in-which area(s) you may need some extra help.

(*I am in the process of creating a thorough diagnostic test.  This post will be up-dated as soon as it is finished.)

    Please,when are the results released?

  4. The Teacher says:

    Hello Hafsha,

The results are available on-line about 10 days after you finish the exam. You are supposed to receive an email to alert you when they are available.

Printed scores are sent to whomever you choose to have them sent to (Universities, etc.) about 13 days after you finish the exam.

It is stated, however, that though they are sent 13 after the exam, that it could take 7-10 days for those recipients to receive the scores, if they are mailed within The United States and may take “more time” when being mailed elsewhere.

I know that none of this is very exact, but that is what is stated on the page about this on the official website.

So, to summarize, if you have to have the scores to a specific institution by any set date, you should plan to take the exam no later than 1 month before that time… (but even earlier is better in case you need to re-take the exam, or for any other un-foreseen obstacle).

    I hope that helps.

    Have An Excellent Day

P.S. you can read the info on the official page here
